Just Curious...

This was the writing prompt on The One-Minute Writer today:

Would you ever be a cast member or contestant in a reality television show?

This got me thinking, especially after being sucked in to watching the new reality show "Momma's Boys" last night (don't judge).  My answer: not only no, but HELL NO

Now, don't get me wrong.  I watch my fair share of reality shows.  I *heart* So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, Dancing With the Stars and The Biggest Loser, but I would never, ever intentionally go on one of them as a contestant - mostly because I wouldn't want to make everyone else feel bad with my mad dancing and singing skills. (I'm just sayin'...  Totally just kidding, too.)

Why do people voluntarily subject themselves to criticism and humiliation?  Is it a lack of self-esteem?  Too much self-assurance?  Their cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs need for attention and to be famous? Do they not realize that they're making themselves look like complete idiots? I.don't.know.  It definitely confuses me, but, of course I'm right there glued to my TV - along with the rest of America - as the indignity, disgrace and general mayhem ensues on any given reality show.

What about you?  Would you ever willingly expose yourself to this type of very public mortification?  If so, why?  What are your favorite reality shows to watch?  Just curious.

Yes. Yes I would.

And I did.

We were on While You Were Out :)

The only show I would consider going on would be The Biggest Loser. And that would just be so someone would kick my behind and get me moving to lose the weight.

Other than that. Nope.

Reality TV is just the worst, but iI do like to watch Top Chef. Jeff got me stuck on it when he was laid up for 3 months. He watches dumb stuff like that. But you've got to love cooking shows. Anyway, we (Jeff again) got stuck on one that was just a farce, but of course we couldn't pull ourselves away from a marathon that lasted for I don't know how many days. One girl on the show had been on 3 or 4 different reality shows. It was her way of making a lazy or crazy-whichever-living. Her name was Toni, I just can't remember the name of the show. Anyway reality TV contestants must not have any life or they just don't like themselves.
I Heart you, sis!

the only reality show i watch is biggest looser, and i would totally go on it. in fact, i would apply to be on it, if i could afford to take several months off work. (how do people do that?)

Not only would I NOT go on one, but I openly mock (most of the time), those who do.
And... if I didn't tell you before, my soon-to-be-but-not-soon-enough-daughter-in-law's parents auditioned to be on Wife Swap. They were almost chosen except that the church wouldn't allow camera's in. So, there you have it in a nutshell
Bunny.
That would be why I mock.....

Thats a toss up. As much as I would love to be one of the Rock of Love girls, I could probably just settle for one of those HGTV shows where they re-do my house.

And what was up with that crazy mom on Momma's Boys that the black girls almost beat up???? I can't believe she was so blatant about the qualifications for her son!!!

Melis - Hello! News to me that Corb's almost-ex-in-laws wanted to be on Wife Swap. Can't say that I'm surprised really.

Vanessa - That one mom was definitely crazy! Who thinks like that anymore? Honestly!

I hate reality TV. Unless Real Housewives from OC is counted as Reality. I am addicted to that and really want to go to lunch with them. I even saw one of them in te OC airport, but was too chicken to go talk to her. Kind of felt weird to be a grown up mommy stalking another grown up mommy.
