Book Review: Mockingjay

*****Spoiler Alert*****

Suzanne Collins's final book in The Hunger Games trilogy came out on Tuesday.  I finished it last night.  (What can I say?  It was an easy read and it took me right around 5 hours to read the entire thing.)

I probably should have re-read the other two before diving into this one, but I just couldn't help it.  I had to know how it all ends.

Katniss is pretty much forced into being the face of the rebellion against The Capitol.  She still has a prep team that gets her all beautified and camera ready.  People who tell her what to say and where to be.  She, of course, rebels against most of it.  It made me wonder which was worse: being in the clutches of The Capitol, or District 13?  Seemed like a toss up as they were both pretty bad.  Each side running their own propoganda game.

The President of District 13 (Coin) is just as evil as President Snow, but it takes a little bit of time for Katniss to realize this.  In the end, President Coin wants to hold The Hunger Games and make the spoiled children of The Capitol take part.  Katniss acts like she thinks this is a good thing, but eventually shows them how she really feels.

Katniss and her friends/team pretty much run a gauntlet toward the end that is reminiscent of the arenas for The Hunger Games.  And, of course she is victorious to a degree.

In the end, she is depressed, damaged mentally and physically, and has lost most of the people closest to her, but manages to move on with her new life.

(Holy cow!  I just made it sound like the most depressing book you could ever read.  It really isn't.  I promise.)

I give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

My wife has this book on hold at the library. I might actually read it when she is done. Your review increased my desire just a smidge.

I LOVED this book. I thought Katniss really grew up from the first 2 books and it was very interesting to see the rebellion (not a helluva lot different than the Capitol). My heart ached for Katniss & company to find a happy ending (even though nothing in the series pointed to the possibility of a happy ending). I think the story ended appropriately and I liked contemplating war & peace and how far is "too far".
