I've never really been a big pop drinker. Sure, I'd have the occasional Diet Coke on the weekend, but for the most part, I never had to have the stuff.
I'm not sure what happened, but for the past several months, I've been buying lime flavored Diet Pepsi. I love the taste of that stuff. Almost like a party in my mouth every time I drank one.
I'd take one with me every day to work and have it at about 9:30 am for a little treat.
About a month ago, I started reading a book called "The Insulin Resistance Diet" and it says that if you're insulin resistant, which unfortunately I am, you should stay away from caffeine and all artificial sweeteners. They are bad for you. Bad, I say. Bad!
So, I had a little 'come to Jesus' chat with myself and decided that I needed to step away from the pop. (Keep in mind I was having just one 12 ounce can per day during the work week. Not a whole lot in comparison to what some people put away on a daily basis.) I told myself I could have it on the weekends when the bff and I went out to eat, but that was it. No more.
I did great that first week. I didn't even miss the stuff. Then, that Saturday, Michelle and I went out to eat and I went a little crazy and drank A LOT of Diet Pepsi with lunch at Tres Hombres. It was goooooood. (The Pepsi and the food.)
Needless to say, that night, while I was home all by my lonesome, I had a major panic/anxiety attack. It was terrible. It was so bad I had to take some anti-anxiety meds I have on hand for just such an occasion, which are few and far between. Thank goodness.
After that, you'd think I'd have learned my lesson, right? Oh no, my friends. I have to be hit over the head with a brick before I learn some lessons, and this was one of those times.
Last Saturday, I had a ridiculous amount of Diet Coke at dinner time, and wouldn't you know it? Panic attack city later that evening. Not as bad as the previous attack, but there just the same.
So, lesson learned. My body thinks caffeine is no good and to be avoided like the plague. (I'm writing this whilst sipping on a caffeine-free Diet Coke.)

I have been off the Diet Coke and all caffeinated beverages for almost a month now, for exactly the reason you described. Anxiety.
I have very mild anxiety and in the past 2 months, have had 3 panic attacks. I had never had one in my life, and didn't even realize what they were until weeks later. I honestly think that this was because of my work schedule change.
I know that caffeine is a HUGE trigger for anxiety and I bought this great book about anxiety and panic attacks, and this was one of the things it said to do. Cut the caffeine. And I haven't had one since, and my overall anxiety is down.
miss martha...you are amazing and YES I have stepped away from the caffeine too! It's easy at times and so HARD at others, just depends what I'm eating! Good Luck
I too, am a fan of Diet Pepsi with lime. It's very refreshing!
Thank goodness for the caffeine-free options!
I am in the process of weaning. Not easy my friend, not easy at all.
I will learn from you and not go CRAZY on the weekends : )
Did you say you were siping on a diet something while writeing this ("The Insulin Resistance Diet" and it says that if you're insulin resistant, you should stay away from caffeine and all artificial sweeteners. They are bad for you. Bad, I say. Bad!)
Diet has artificial sweeteners so keep hitting yourself with that brick.
Love ya.
